    Posted: 08 Mar 2010 at 12:37pm
Hi,

I seem to have always had issues ith the Jib Halyard Spinlock slipping, and having to put a slip knot in the Jib Halyard.
I don't cleat the halyard when stepping the mast.
The teeth in the cleat don't look too bad.
Halyard is laser supplied.

Does anyone know the best solution for this within the rules?
Is there a better cleat allowed in the rules?
Should I be using a different rope?

Thanks,
Ross.

What colour is your existing jammer??  Does it have a blue trim (alloy/ plastic teeth) from an older mast or the better yellow trim (allow/ alloy teeth) from newer ones.  The type of halyard will also effect the performance.  Are you using the Laser provided halyard or have you already upgraded it ??

As I understand it there is a new alternative cleat planned that can be retro fitted using the existing plate.  I don't know the timing of it but am sure that it will be posted here as soon as its known.

Ian, we have the yellow jammer, and the Laser provided halyard.
Do people tend to upgrade the halyard?

Cheers.

I would say that they do over time but it may be worth waiting for the new jammer solution as that may be a cheaper and more effective option especially if there is nothing wrong with your existing halyard.

Any update on this? We spend the weekend knotting the jib halyard to get it to stay up. Very frustrating...

Some boats have fitted a small plate on the mast bracket and mounted onto that a cam style jammer which seems to hold the halyard a lot better; one of the winter mods for us this year.

I replaced both the Spinnaker and Jib halyard Spinlock a couple of weeks before the Nationals. I also replaced the Jib halyard. The new YELLOW Spinlock with the yellow bit pushed to the left hand side of the jammer, works really well.
I think we have to remember that the halyards on these boats are under quite a bit of pressure and replacing them as and when is part of normal boat "maintenance"...It is not a "failure" of equipment it has just been used and needs replacing....

Moving the yellow bit only adjusts the ease of opening. Should have no effect on "holding" the halyard.
Donie, I also knot the halyard every time, even though I put on a new spinlock over the winter.
Think a cam cleat is the only way to go. (Or a VO70 style halyard lock!!)

I have had to resort to taping the cam bit down into the cleat body - and this despite replacing both the Spinlock and the halyard at the beginning of this season! It still slips. I'm going to the Boat Show to seek inspiration!
